Conceivably look at some of the studies that support atkins in the faq section. Also point out, its probably just the induction phase he is familiar with and not the diet as a whole. Plus mention that its a move towards a more natural hunter / gatherer way of eating, trying to weed out rarefied food which add loads of nasty chemicals. I ' m sure other members have faced this problem too and will have advice. Congratulations on starting, and best of luck [ / icon_cool. gif]

Most people who think Atkins is dangerous are really unfamiliar with the actual nutritional plan. They think we don ' t eat anything but meat, butter and lettuce. If that were correct, it would indeed be dangerous, but it would not be Atkins.
The results of the most recent study at Stanford University are pretty easy to understand and also pretty convincing. Here ' s the link:
http: / / med. stanford. edu / news_releases / 2007 / march / diet. html
You can use me for an example, if you want. On Dec. 1, 2007, I weighed 254 pounds and my blood sugar levels put me very close to the range for diabetes. My doctor told me I had pre - diabetes. I was about a hundred pounds overweight.
I went on Atkins on January 1. Since then, I have lost 66 pounds and my cholesterol has gone down dramatically. Total cholesterol should ideally be under 200. My most recent test was 139. My blood sugars went down dramatically also, so I am now in the normal range. No more threat of diabetes. I feel great and have lots more energy.
As far as the cost: I am spending a lot less on food than I used to. That ' s because I am eating much less and am not feeling hungry. I don ' t snack all the time like I used to. I do eat some more expensive foods in small portions, but a $3 carton of fresh raspberries will last me longer than a $3 bag of cheetos used to. I used to polish off a big bag in one evening. A carton of raspberries lasts me at least two days, so that cuts the cost per day in half.
Plus, my health costs are going to be much lower than they would have been if I had not gone on atkins. Insulin, syringes, blood sugar monitors, etc. are very expensive. So is hospitalization and surgery for heart problems.
The only thing that is costing me extra money is that I need to buy some new clothes every couple of months. The old ones just hang on me. [ / icon_biggrin. gif]

I was concerned about the WAF ( wife acceptance factor ) when I first started. I didn ' t tell her for a couple of days. I was worried because she lst her baby weight twice by eating low fat, low calories, and exercise. I had been trying that and couldn ' t make any progress. I was just constantly hungry. This diet will curb your appetite, as noted by karenjs. Not that I encourage hiding things from your significant others, I know I have to at times, but if you can avoid telling him until you ' re seeing the results and he can see the results, he may think differently.

Make sure he sees ( and notices ) when you eat your vegetables. This should put him more at ease.
