Hello everyone,
I have been on the Atkins diet since June of last year and started at 230 pounds, and I am now down to 165! Yes sounds great but the problem is I was down to 157 [ / icon_sad. gif] I try to do the maintenance phase, and I seem to be putting on weight hastily! For example, this weekend I had whole grain pancakes, and an omelette for brunch and a burger patty wrapped in lettuce for dinner, the next day Induction like meals and a piece of bread with dinner. I thought this was what the maintenance phase was to suppose to be like but I ' ve already put on 8 pounds in about two weeks. This is very discouraging, is there anyone currently in maintenance? I was just going to do it for like a month then go back on induction because I want to be down to 150 and I was only 7 pounds away!! I ' m a really depressed and feel like trapped in this diet!! Help!
Also, I ' m starting to get severely hungry all the time. Its like I can ' t get full. When I first started the diet my appetite decreased dramatically. Now it seems like I ' m eating just as much as I did when I was 250 pounds!!!!
Guys I was so motivated since the beginning of the diet but now all I feel is frustrated and fat [ / icon_sad. gif]

I am experiencing problems just like yourself. It appears that my weight will yoyo around a particular range. A heavy and prolonged reduction in calorie intake will reaction in marginal weight loss. But short of continual fasting it is becoming increasingly difficult to continue this weight instead of slowly gaining whenever I slightly increase my carbohydrates and / or acceptable ( protein ) food intake.
And for the most part I really dont indulge in carbohydrates, having moved beyond the need or inclination. As many others will note a range of ailments and over all languor appear to be strongly related to carbohydrates.
So it is difficult to see a way out. Sequentially I am focusing on a lot of exercise to augment muscle mass, although going for an overall lean rather than bulky outcome. I have found that extra muscle does appear to go along way towards partition break through weight range deadblocks. Therefore my limited advice is to incorporate more exercise with the intent of moderate muscle boost.

I surprise if the hunger issue is tied to the increased carbs... generating insulin, sugar crash and more hunger... That old vicious circuit.
It may unfortunately be that you are just uncommonly sensitive to carbs...

Do you have the book? If not, it ' s definitely worth getting.
I actually bought mine at a rummage sale for 2 roll, then found the 1972 sequel for 50 cents ( I highly recommend reading both, the both offer one insight ).
You have to find out what your CCL ( critical carbohydrate limit ) is. That takes time and careful measurement. Mine is about 30g a day - which means that, for the rest of my life, I ' ll be eating almost like I ' m still induction, unless I want to gain the weight back.
I now that sounds awful, but it ' s really not.
In fact, about once a month when I give in and have a " cheat " dessert, it ' s overly sweet and makes my mouth and throat feel sticky, and I ' m hung over the next day as though I got drunk. AND I Often gain at least a few lbs from less than half a pound of food.
It could very well be that your personal tolerance is very low.
I know that sounds awful at this point, but radically cutting carbohydrates, ( despite what the food and nutrition industry, who makes most of its beans from sugars and rarefied, refined, starchy foods, would have you believe ) is really the only healthy, NATURAL, evolutionally sound way to lose weight ( that 1972 potboiler really got to me, lol ).

rconnor! we started at around the same time and wow, I didn ' t realize you made it all the way to your goal. I ' m a little grudging right now.
But did you go straight from induction to maintenance? 8 lbs in 2 weeks seems impossibly huge. The idea is to add in carbs in increments of 5 g / week until you are no longer losing but also not gaining. Starting with healthier carbs and making your way to stuff like pancakes. I ' d say go back to the induction list of carbs ( not having to back to induction, per se, but starting with those carbs ) and adding other types of low - glycemic carbs but only a few servings a week. and then another. That was what I gleaned from the book... but it ' s been a while since I read it.
Good luck,
Molley

i too am on maintenance. i too struggle with the 10 pounds issue i got to goal, went on maintenance and ten pounds come on fast and that was only adding some bread, never adding sugar or candy or even FRUIT... the way i look at this is that... this is a WOL ( way of life ) no just a diet that you get to goal and you get tired of and feel trapped.... it is a woe you need to learn to adapt to... if you want to keep the weight off you will need to do this woe for ever, that is my firm belief... i struggle to stay at goal, i never get depressed, but i fear the weight gain, i feal the scales, i fear bread and sugar. i know the only way i will stay a size 8 and not be a size 28 again, is to continue this way of life, this way of eating. for me maintenance is eating good carbs, and veggies, i eat no bread, no sugar, no fruit,... that is what it takes for me to maintain.... hard?? of course, worth it...??? PRICLESS...
i too started july 2005 to july 2006 from 225 pounds to 135, i stay at 135 to 145 pounds ( my highest weight was 304 in the 90 ' s got to 200 stayed there for 15 years, then found atkins at 225 july 2005, and only wanted to get under 200 pounds!!! )
i find it EXTREAMLY hard to get back on induction... but i do it, i feel like royal crap with the inducion flu, headaches and feeling really bad the first several days as the sugaars get out of my sysltem.
i do so much better loosing than maintaning...
i did induction AGAIN, two weeks ago and i am back to 135,
what can i say, again, i say it is hard... but i guess I LOVE BEING TRAPPED IN THIS DIET... i love going into junior stores and buying clothes that are too big, i love wearing a size 5 underpanties, i love a
c cup, i love that i have no ass, yeah.... NO jennifer lopez ass....
i wish this helps you go rethink why you want to loose,
you say you are hungry all the time, well EAT.. eat all the steak, eggs, anything protien you want till you are sooooo full you have to unbutton your britches.. i had one of those days today... i have had fried catfish filets, ( breaded in parmasian cheese - - very very low carbs ) shrimp, steak, 4 boiled eggs, sugar free jello, chicken wings with hot sauce, a salad with low carb dressing and pork rinds, all in one day.... eating like a pig, yes, loosing weight HELLA YES...
i sure hope this helps.... it has helped me just writing it so see i am not alone on maintenance and it is as hard for everyone as it is me, and we are all sorta lost here after loosing and extreamly large amount of weight... a new person in an old world, new beginings. new experiences...
what a nice place to be..
we all know we can loose, and we all know we can gain.
what we have to do is learn how to maintain living one day at a time and for me that is one day with out sugar and bread
amen
and thanks for hearing me out.. good luck to you. you can do it. i hope i give you strength as you have given me.
i hope these photos are not to big, if so the admin can delete them
i am proud of my accomplishmest
i have never
