This is right from Atkins. com and is something we need to be reminded of. Low fat and Atkins DON ' T WORK. However, we do need to watch our saturated fat intake ONLY when we INCREASE CARBS......

Can I do a low - fat comedy of Atkins?

Fat is the mechanism that makes controlled carbohydrate weight loss work. The Atkins Nutritional Road teaches you how to use fat to your advantage. When you are doing Atkins, fat is your friend not only because it is satiating but because it slows down the release of glucose into the blood. By moderating blood sugar swings, fat reduces carbohydrate cravings. Dietary fat, in combination with controlled carbohydrate consumption, accelerates the burning of stored body fat. When your body uses fat, rather than glucose for fuel, the metabolic performance is called lipolysis.

However, you do want to eat good fat, Natural, healthy fat is found in olives and olive oil, seeds, nuts, seed and nut oils and butters, avocado, and oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel and butter. Saturated fat, found in meats, butter and coconut oil, poses no health risk in the Induction and Ongoing Weight Loss phases of the program. You will burn both dietary and body for energy. However, when you reach Pre - Maintenance and Maintenance and are no longer in a primarily fat - burning mode, it may be prudent to curtail the amount of saturated fat until more research is done.

The kinds of fat you should avoid are chemically particular, clear hydrogenated oils, such as margarine and reduction. Look for cold - pressed or expeller - pressed oils, and store them in a dark, cool place to keep them from going rancid or oxidizing. High heat changes the molecular structure of the cell and will transform even a good fat into a trans fat so be sure not to burn oil or allow it to be found while cooking.

People who try to do their own low - fat anecdote of Atkins will not only find themselves hungry, they also will not achieve the weight loss results of those who consume healthy fats.

Good reminder, LoriAnn.

The diet works as it is presented in the book. We need to be reminded not to tinker with it ( other than suggested there ) if we expect it to work the same with the same benefits. [ / icon_smile. gif]

Thanks for that explanation Lori.

I like to give specialist explanations to my wife and some of my friends ( who show recreation ) into why Atkins works.

I do pass on that eating " healthy " fats is wanted to success,, but when is it " too much " fat???

Should fat be the principle source of our calories??

Should it out weigh our protein consumption?

It only takes 1 / 2 as many fat grams, to equal the same amount of calories as it does protein.. So, if you are getting 75 % of your daily calories from fat,, is that really healthy?? I ' ve looked for this kind of information and can ' t find it,, but I will never dispute the detail that eating fat does have these benefits.

It would just be so much easier if there was a standard formula for all people.. but it just doesn ' t work that way does it? ahahahaah

I think that the basic Atkins menu examples are guideline for what we should have. They provide a general idea of what our protein / fat / carb ratio should be. I was concerned about what to do as I approached Pre - Maintenance. The more I read the Atkins. com site, the more I see the future or Maintenance as an easy lifetime goal.

A lot of people think that Atkins is an excuse for easing half pound of bacon in one sitting, along with 6 eggs and a slab of cheese all cooked in a stick of butter.

Reality is - the menu plans are very balanced.

What I have gotten consistently from the Atkins book, is moderation. He maintains that eating fats is natural and healthy, but he also states that as we add carbs back into our diet we reduce the fats we eat. In the final analysis Atkins is not a high fat diet. It is a diet of moderation and balance.

Evrrdy makes a good point, and the concept of moderation fits right into her idea. But as LoriAnn says, low fat is not necessary either. The French use butter extensively in cooking. The Italians and Greeks use olive oil extensively. They are all, as cultures, much less obese than are Americans. They also eat less than we do and are more active, two elements stressed by Dr. Atkins in his book.

The one dietary aspect that so many of us have not possessed in the past is moderation so if we can attain that balance we are one level closer to long term success.

I used to like Julia Child ' s jokes about the " fat police ". When I was young my dad had a chemist friend at the U. Of Michigan doing research on how differents fats are metabilized in the body and how that was related to trends noticed in epidemiological studies. What they reported over 25 years ago was that trans fats or fats processed at high temperature were bad for you and many natural fats such as butter and nut oils had healthy properties. Of course the work was hard to get published but every time

we went to dinner my dad would lecture anyone serving margerine ( our family joke it ' s the margerine that kills you ). 25 years later some people are starting to catch on.

Not all fats are bad, your body needs them for good nervous system function as well as for other purposes. Two cases in point a huge fraction of vegan kids have dyselexia. Why? Because the mylein sheath on nerves needs fats to develop. What else, if you are a female cumulative studies show that at low cholesterol levels heart attacks actually INCREASE ( see

Science mag. March 2001 ). Why could this be? possibly because these people are eating a diet with lots of simple carbs possibly because of the relation between fat and hormone processes.

Low fat Atkins is a no go. To keep both fats and carbs low would overload on protein with other possible bad consequences.
