Hello all,
I ' ve just started on the Atkins diet. I live in India and loiter mainly on a vegetarian diet. We ' ve been brought up with the belief that our only source of protein is lentil. So, when I don ' t read lentils in the accepted foods list, I ' m a little surprised. Does anyone know if lentils are allowed while doing the Atkins?
Thanks for your help

Lentils, although high in protein ( for a plant source ), they are also high in carbohydrate because they are a legume. A 3. 5 oz serving of lentils provides 29 net grams of carbohydrate ( 60 carbs - 31 grams of fiber = 29 net carbs ). Far too much for Induction. We are allowed a TOTAL of 20 per day, 12 to 15 of which must come from the approved veggies.
If anyone has figured out a way to do Atkins and progress a vegetarian, Gigi could probably use your help!
Also... fwiw, lentils are an Partial protein. You ' ll have to combine them with a grain to make a complete protein that will supply you will all of the essential amino acids that animal proteins provide. This would further deviate from Atkins if you added grains. " Essential " means you have to EAT them... our bodies cannot make the essential amino acids we need for growth, building and repair of body tissues.

As Tril said, lentils are really not allowed on Induction.
The question of vegetarian version of Atkins has come up a few times before, but we never found a good solution for it... It is difficult and food choices are very few. However, apparently there is a website for vegetarians on low - carb diets; you will find a link to it in this thread: http: / / lowcarbsite. com / forum / viewtopic. php? t=6322.
Here are two more old threads about vegetarianism and Atkins, hopefully you wil find something helpful in them.
