I am going to the spam today and as always am zinged by the smell of the popcorn I used to be able to eat. What kinds of nuts can I bring that aren ' t too high in carbs that I can munch on during the movie?
Are peanuts too high?

Yup! Peanuts are a legume, not a true nut. [ / icon_sad. gif] Try some pecans, walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts or a bag of pork rinds.

Next time just get a big diet soda and sip it during the film. When we are trying to body a healthier lifestyle for ourselves, we need to learn that snacking and eating are really not necessary at every circumstance. Change those bad habits and realize, for yourself, just what you can afford to eat and not eat.
I disagree about peanuts. I think they ' re fine to eat. They are an high source of phosphorus, which we need in small amounts. But eat any nuts in small amounts.
If you have a weight problem and are trying to lose much weight at all, learn to live without the little comfort snacks. It ' s a necessity!
Good Luck! [ / icon_smile. gif]

Teuthis - I can honestly say that I will not go without popcorn in a movie show for the rest of my life, that is for certain. But for now I will. I don ' t have a weight problem, and Atkins has really taught me a lot about myself and my eating habits. I used to eat pasta, bread, rice, etc. every day of the a week. I would work out and I never ate huge amounts, but still, that is what kept me from maintaining a size 6. I know that one day will come that every once in a while, I will eat a turkey sandwich from Togo ' s and a dry potato with my steak, or pasta at my Italian mother - in - law ' s house, or a piece of birthday cake at a party. If I told myself that I could never eat these things again, then I would be setting myself up for failure. This diet has taught me many things about myself and I would never in a million years go back to my old eating habits, but I would never go the rest of my life not enjoying certain food every once in a while. Anyway, that is just my personal feeling and experiece.

Thats kind of like smoking Jennax. I used to be found almost a pack a day for about 2 years and i quit. It was relatively no bother, and now i only betide when im drinking and occasionally, a cig here and there every so often doesnt make me failure back into old habits at all, but for some it would make them jump right back into pack - a - day - mode. I know they arent good and i know my lungs are healthier w / o them, but they go so good with beer...
Anyways my pt is that we can control some of our vices, and some control us.
Food is certainly pleasurable, it should be enjoyed and if you can strike a healthy bill between your weight and the foods you eat and enjoy then more power to you!!!

I don ' t totally pass on Maryanne, a parched potato is not like putting concrete into your lungs, in my opinion!
My feeling is that I have learned so much about myself on this atkins diet, and as I said I would never go back to my old eating habits because they have far-reaching changed and my whole lifestyle has changed. For me personally, and this is not to speak that this is the way for anyone else, but for me personally, I ' m not going to go the rest of my life without having a slice of pizza or a slice of birthday cake. The great thing about this forum is that we all come cool bringing our solo history and share it with others. And my one history is that I have never been overweight or had eating issues, I just ate too many carbs in the week. And I know that having a slice of birthday cake at my neice ' s party will not spiral me into eating carbs five days a week. I have to give myself more credit than that and I do.

Sorry Maryanne, I just re - read your post and I understand what you were saying. My point is, like you said, for some it might make them go back to their old eating habits. You can have a cig with a beer and not go back to smoking a pack a day or whatever you smoked. But maybe someone else would go back to a pack a day if they had a taste of one cigarette.
We come here and bring our own individualness and uniqueness, this isn ' t one size fits all. We are all different, with different genetics, pre - dispositions, and will power.

Jennax,
I can understand what ure trying to relate. I just tainted non veg to lose weight and frankly i dont enjoy it very much. So u can visualize if i think of making it a way of life, i get recreancy! [ / icon_eek. gif]
However, i think teuthis has been on this track far ahead of us with brilliant results and maybe what he says is correct as well. See i think everyone talks from experiance and maybe his experiance with making it a way of life has been very successful.
Its hereafter upto an solitary to chose their path. We just share here at the forum and offer advise but noone wld ever force anything on anyone im sure.
That said, i can project myself one day doing atkins for life which is adding back carbs and letting go the bad ones. Altho i shalt not resist the temptation of a hot chocolate sundae, a doughnut or some fried rice when i want them bad. After all u live just once and one has to enjoy oneself!!! [ / icon_cool. gif] [ / icon_biggrin. gif]
Maryanne, hats off to yr courage to stick to cigs only once in a while. Like u said with me its presently going back to 5 cigs a day and making it a routine. Im trying so hard to cut down but for now its proving tough. But yr post inspired me girl! If u can i shld too!! [ / icon_razz. gif]

Popcorn... [ / icon_cry. gif]
I ' ve seen a few spam so far, and it really hasn ' t bothered me to much... but I find that, not much is really bothering me. For me loosing weight was more then just needing to loose a few pounds... It was more like trying to add 20 years to my life and avoiding many dangerous and debilitating diseases. As well as trying to live, and love myself and hopefully find someone that I can love and live life with. I have good idea what makes me tick, and knowing that I can ' t allow myself the luxury of taking time off here and there. In my mind it would mean I ' m risking everything, and opening the door to more incidents, so I just don ' t go there.
All that said, with all the exercise I ' m doing currently and all the plans I have for the future. I ' m certain when I reach my goal, I ' m going to keep on exercising and staying active. Next saturday I have commited to hiking 10km bush trail. I plan on biking to work starting next year. etc. When I reach goal... I will continue to eat healthy... Whole grain breads, and perhaps the occasional Whole wheat pasta ' s.. Salads.. and well the whole nine yards of everything Good for you. But I will enjoy Popcorn again. However I will have to draw the line, elsewhere... No more pop ever. No more chocolate bars ever. No more chips ever. etc. etc. etc.
Actually for someone who is doing Atkins for life... I don ' t believe Popcorn is all that bad for you anyway... It ' s very low in calories, and as long as you don ' t drench it in butter. I use to eat a large, then I ' ll be content with a small... and If I ' m lucky maybe, just maybe I can share it with someone special. [ / icon_smile. gif]
So anyway I think your all right. If you never had a problem with weight, but you have learned to be more concious of what goes in your body... I ' m sure popcorn can be a managable treat... We are definately all a bit different aren ' t we. [ / icon_wink. gif]
Goodnight everyone.

Do what Teuthis said and get a HUUUGE Diet Coke. That ' s what I do. The only downfall is you ' ve got to pee REALLY bad at the end of the movie. Haha!
I just get a big can of Planter ' s Honey Roased Peanuts ( 6 net carbs in 49 peices so BE CAREFUL not to go over board like I did once ). Or you could try sunflower seeds, which are a good choice, also. Anything like pistachios and walnuts will do, also. I ' m a nibbler during spam also [ / icon_wink. gif]

i like to nibble during spam as well. Howabout just going to the atkins site and checking which nut has the lowest carbs. Then when you purchase that nut, decide how many carbs you want to have while at the spam and measure your nuts to that amount. Dont eat a bite more. Get the diet coke as well.
Good luck.

We go to the spam a lot, for a family of five. I just get a hotdog, take off the bun and eat that and drink my diet coke. I don ' t really miss popcorn. I used to eat it every night with hubby before bed. Now it hurts my tummy.

Same here!
I ' m doing / done atkins in order to make my body look good and be able to go to the beach without any love handles. They do seem smaller, but i ' m approaching 165 lbs from 180 lbs, i ' m 5 ' - 11 ". I ' m not sure what kind of diet I should do at this point. I don ' t think I can eat pastas or brads at the moment, I have a pretty good metabolism, but not sure if I should continue, or do it gradually, or just start eating normally.
I think my key component would be to balance everything, just have a balanced diet. I ' m just hoping to find out when I can start balancing my food.

I do not post much but I come to the site most every day to see how everyone is doing and once in a while decide to give my 2 cents worth.
I have to say that from what I can see everyone replying to this post is right and good points are being brought up by all.
My take on the whole is I agree with Teuthis about changing your daily eating habits for life. I also agree with Jenna that I don ' t feel its possible to go your entire life avoiding the so called bad foods. Sometimes you just have to treat yourself but be careful and don ' t get carried away.
Anyone changing their eating lifestyle has to know that willpower is the key to the entire change. I think it was Teuthis that has said it more than once. " Don ' t fret the small stuff ". When I started the Atkins lifestyle I realized that I could not avoid all the do not eat items the rest of my life and also realized that if I absolutly could not have sugar or starches no matter what, that this Woe would not work. For example when I go out to dinner and order coleslaw for dinner I don ' t worry about the small amount of sugar that may be in it. When I have a salad, the only dressing I eat is Thousand Island, I don ' t worry about the sugar or sweet relish that is in it.
To me the whole thing is to know when do stop. Eat small amounts of pop corn if thats what you have to have, but eat it 1 kernel at a time instead of a handful at a time and enjoy and savor the treat and realize that is what it is, A treat.
If anyone can go through life eating only the allowed foods More Power To You that is great. But the majority of people will add some of their favorite No No foods to their diets at times and if that is what it takes to stay the course I see no problem with it as long as it is done with restraint.
Remember the only one responsible for how we feel about ourselves is Me, Myself, and I. So my way of looking at it is, if having a treat every so often will keep me from going back to my old habits so be it and don ' t worry about it.
By the way from Feb. 1 until now I have lost 65# from 275 to 210 and I feel great about myself. All my friends keep asking me " What has gotten into you " " since losing weight you are like a different person ".
What a great feeling. I have come out of my own little world and joined the real world. I am a different person.
I want to thank everyone on this board for their help. Even though I don ' t post much I do read the posts You all may never know how much you have helped me and helped give me a new life. I cannot thank you all enough. Believe me I may have a treat once in a while but I will never go back to my old lifestyle.
Thank All Of You From The Bottom Of My Heart
