My doctor is insisting that I lose some weight due to some health reasons. After being able to prolong a healthy 120 or so in my 20 ' s, and although after 3 children I ' m only 147 or so at 5 ' 4 ", I ' ve now developed hypoglycemia, and my joints are really not liking the extra weight. I ' ve pretty much been told that carbs are a no - no b / c it sends the pancreas into overdrive. I was thinking that Atkins was probably a decent alternative, however, several years ago I started keeping Kosher, and several of the recipes / menus I find online work in pork and such ( which I don ' t eat ). Is it possible to achieve what I need to without going on a " full blown " Atkins diet?
I ' m sure that a 20 - 27 pound weight loss doesn ' t seem like a large way to go, but I ' ve now been trying to lose this for about 5 years, and seem to be going NO WHERE on my own, and I really think that I need to find a new access.
Any suggestions?

Well, I believe that kosher should not be a problem - you don ' t have to eat pork, eat kosher meats and fish, you have lots of those to stockpile from!
However, taken your health condition, you should consult a doctor before starting a low - carb diet. Since it is essentially based on glucose deprivation ( in HUUUUge oversimplification! ) I am not sure ( I ' m not a medical specialist ) but I think it could exacerbate your hypoglycemia - what we are trying to reduce, you already have too low...
Make sure you consult a doctor before starting!

The doctor is the one who suggested it, which is something I found a little odd, but he said that the carbs are what is throwing the blood sugar out of whack. He said it ' s something to do with my pancreas, and the way I break down the sugar / carbs. I guess that I send myself into overdrive somehow. I have noticed that since I started staying away from " white food " ( except in moderation ), I ' ve had far fewer bouts with my blood sugar dropping ( into the 40 ' s - Yuk! ).
To answer the other question, Kosher means ( literally ) " fit ". It means that I eat using the rules set forth in Leviticus as to what I can and cannot consume.
