Could someone or some persons clarify the how diet can affect muscle loss. Will being in inducation for a prolonged period cause the body to break down muscle and for that matter do carbohydrates or nutrients typically abstracted from those food sources play any central roles in muscle developlment?

Hi!
The body requires protein to physique and sustain muscle mass. As the Atkins way of eating is rich in protein, and we are burning fat as fuel through ketosis, the loss of muscle mass does not happen. In many diets your body will burn off carbs first and then turn to burning off muscle in preference to fat as the body regards fat stores as emergency fuel. Atkins has a metabolic advantage over other diets in that by controlling carbohydrate intake, we can make the body burn off fat for fuel rather than turning to lean muscle mass.
You can safely stay in induction for up to six months if you are correctly following the Atkins plan. You should not have any trouble with losing muscle mass. By correctly i mean " by the book " - - including the required amount of carbs through veges and also vitamin supplementation and having the correct intake of water. If you are not following the plan correctly you could be doing yourself harm.
hope this is helpful!

Yes, your post helped in many ways.
Im concerned, of recent between illness, time constraints and admittedly a lack of committment I have not had the right foods on hand, either when out for the better part of the day or at home, to maintain to the Atkin diet doctrine.
Besides periods of prolonged disorder my committment to exercise seems to have paid off with slightly greater muscle mass and a faster metabolism even on relatively inactive days. So even in down time my weight has not spiked.
That said, there are days when I dont have enough protein and am worried that this may outcropping in muscle loss. If my diet is being spiked with high carbohydrate foods, will my body typically resort to protein over fat under ( some of ) these conditions?
Ive just read more than I wanted to know about soy protein and have to look for alternatives, it appears I ' ll be taking a bottle of whey protein convene with my on my daily outings.

HI
Are you a vegetarian? To ensue the Atkins plan you need to really do it " by the book " or you could be causing yourself problems. To come from the plan would mean that you had a good intake of protein in the form of meat fish eggs etc. If you are vegetarian then i am not sure that the Atkins plan is best suitable to you. Maybe there is someone more able to give a better opinion about this than I am. I am sorry to hear that you have been unwell. I recommend that you consult your doctor to make sure that the plan will not be causing you any health Issues. Good Luck!

no, not a vegetarian. I would like to be, but find a lack of red meat is difficult to substitute a few weeks in.
My concern is that of recent when out for prolonged periods I dont eat very well. On any given weekday I might not actually eat for almost ten hours. Or otherwise the majority of foods available are low protein, high fat and high processed carbyhydrates.
Not eating results in massive headaches and a great deal of physical soreness the day / s thereafter. Whereas eating will undermine the core principles of the Atkins diet.
Salads alone wont help, I know that physically my body will require a fair amount of protein and a moderate amount of fats to avoid headaches if nothing else.
And as with the original concern of my post, these prolonged periods of not eating or eating low protein foods may well be undermining all the effort I put into my exercise habits whenever time and opportunity allows.
As I said I will probably be suqeezing a water bottle with whey proteint concentrate into my hipbag to help alleviate the situation. I should probably obtain the Atkins book sometime.

Hi Again
Yes its a good idea to buy the book! I take my food with me to work as there is nowhere nearby to buy anything. I take a salad plus boiled eggs, kabana, tins of salmon or tuna ( love the ring pulll tins or the sachets - makes life so much easier ) you can get sliced ham ready packed into serving sized portions in the pre packed deli section of the supermarket. Sometimes I take left over meats from dinner the night before like cold roast chicken, lamb or beef. there are lots of options. If refrigeration is an issue there are many little Esky type carriers that have freezable inserts available that will keep things cold at least until lunchtime. Take some time in the supermarket if you can to browse through the variety of foods available now that are high in protein that are transportable. There are many cheeses that are packed so that they dont need refrigeration.

Hey,
I don ' t know the technical answer to your questions but it seems to me that if you go from atkins to high fat, low protein, high processed carb diet that your body would turn to burning carbs for energy since that ' s much easier for it to do than to burn protein.
It ' s something to consider though - - your body CAN burn protein for energy but when does it do that? Hmm, the only reason i thought was if you have too much intake of protein, which doesn ' t seem to be your problem.10 октября 2008 г.
