i somehow went from 170 to 175 overnight and i spent the last week trying to lose it. because of this, i swim for an hour and walk 2 miles every other day. i also switched my vegetable of choice from brocolli to watercress ( which has. 4 g of carbs per 1 / 4 cup ) i also tried eating more fish and chicken ( cholesterol reasons ). the only thing i can think of as cause for my weight gain is soymilk ( plain... which has 1. 2 g per 8oz. ). i just don ' t get it, i ' m still 175 on an empty stomach. maybe because i don ' t eat often enough? but i promote to sleep for 8 - 9 hours at a time.

That much weight gain in one day has to be from water. Have you been drinking enough water? Have increased your soduim intake without sensible it? I know for me, if I don ' t drink enough water it will cause me to gain, cause my body will grip on to what it has. Maybe you are losing a lot of water exercising in the hot sun, and need to up your intake. Just a thought. If nothing else works, try giving up the soy milk for a while and see it that helps. Before I forget, there is the thing about muscle weighing more that fat, but still 5 pounds over night??? Probably not.

I shake on... you can ' t gain 5 pounds overnight. It ' s just water retention. Drink your water and you ' ll see a difference!

right, well, the excercise started because i was gaining weight. i thought that i had to take another step in regulation to lose weight consistently. as for the water intake, i don ' t keep track of how much water i drink but it ' s gotta be close to 1. 5 liters a day. this is just really discouraging. i spent the last 2 months in a stalled 170lbs and now i ' m actually gaining weight. not to mention the vending machines at school now bear " moonpies " so temptations are running high.

9ball... i have been stuck at 175 - 170 for the past couple of months. I know the frustration. But please hang in there!! It will eventually work out for you in the end. Say NO to the moonpies! [ / icon_biggrin. gif]

Another thing you might consider is if you might be reasonably allergic to soy. That may well cause you to pick up and retention on to water. Drop the soy milk and see what happens.

It could also be that with your exercise, and extra exercise, you are putting on some extra muscle. Muscle is heavy... and could tally for a gradual wight gain.... even masking fat loss.
Conceivably it is time to have your body composition tested so you konw what your % body fat is.... if you track that instead of just your wieght, muscle gain will not stow away fat loss....

9Ball. for your weight you should be drinking at least 64 to 85 oz of water / day. At 1. 5 liters / day, you ' re only drinking about 48oz.
Also have you been measuring? Losing inches?
Good luck. [ / icon_biggrin. gif]

Your weight can go up or down even more than that. It ' s water most likely. Have you been keeping up your exercise? Are you regular? Those are factors and five pounds isn ' t really much to gain or lose at all. Keep up the good work you ' re doing and you ' ll keep losing.
However, if you want to lose more weight, eat less food.
Good Luck! [ / icon_smile. gif]

9 - ball, my weight goes up and down as well. I got to 143 and then started working out at a gym and building muscle. in 2 weeks I got up to 151. I was extremely unhappy. Then I spent a whole week on induction and drinking lots of water, I mean accept for my coffee in the morning, I drank nothing but water. I got back down to 145. But I also haven ' t been to the gym in that time either. Granted I am female and had TOM in there, which causes water weight, I would tend to agree that it is the amount of water you are drinking and what are your supplements like these days? Also, you can develop allergies very late in life and not know that you are allergic to something or you might have been allergic all along and not known it. For example, my son is highly allergic to corn. He cannot eat it as a veggie, he cannot eat corn syrup, high fructose cornsyrup, but he can eat fish or shrimpr, breaded in corn flour, but not any type of doritos or tortillas made with corn flour. I think the difference is the amount of protein consumed with the corn flour on the fish counteracts the chemicals that cause his anger and stomach to hurt so badly he lashes out to hit something. My point is that whil you may have been eating soy in certain forms all of your life, some of those forms may not agree with you. Chemicals are strange and what may be good this way, may explode another way. I hope this helps and makes sense.

hmmm... i ' ve lowered my carbs even further and i also increased my excercise. i ' ve felt slimmer but the scales shows that i ' ve stayed the same weight. i doubt i ' ve gained any significant amount of muscle in a week so i ' ll have to chalk it up to water retention. i think it might be the amount of sodium i ' ve been eating along the meat. i ' ll try to limit things like sausages.
on a side note, i ' ve been called in by a doctor to review my LDL cholesterol, which is 184 when i should be 10 - 110. the nurse told me over the phone that it ' s not " life threatening " but it is indeed worth taking a look at. either way, i ' ve been called in for an appointment. this was the first test for my cholesterol ever so i have nothing to compare it to. i have a feeling that my cholesterol was a lot higher before ( i ' m more active, energetic, and slimmer... i can ' t think of a reason why i would have been better off before ). either way, the last thing i wanna do is have an argument with a doctor. can someone give me some advice on what to do or say? i have a feeling that my doctor is going to try to persuade me to stop atkins.

well, i went to the doctors and told them that i was on atkins. he basically said that if i was going to do atkins, eat lean meat and more fish than red meat. i ' m gonna have my cholesterol taken again in 3 months... hopefully, it ' ll be better by then.

Glad to hear that you went and had the that talk with your doc... and that you don ' t have to give up on Atkins. Should be interesting to see if tweeking the diet to cut down on the saturated fat helps or not. GOOD LUCK.

My hubby gave up Atkins cold turkey when his cholesterol went thru the roof. But he ' d never have it checked before and he blamed it on Atkins. Thing is his mom has the same problem. So for him it is hereditary and he has to take meds no matter what he eats. So your doc might be thinking it ' s the same for you. No need to change the way you eat, just modiffy it enough that diet may help. But if it doesn ' t it isn ' t what you are eating. [ / icon_biggrin. gif]
